Russia has moved tanks to the former Soviet border with Afghanistan as the US and British military pull out from the country.
Vladimir Putin's task force will ostensibly stage military drills with
Tajikistan and Uzbekistan at the Harb-Maidon training ground.
But Russia has ordered its forces to the the border region in Tajikistan more than two weeks ahead of the start of the war games.
"As part of the upcoming joint tactical exercise, Russian tank crews from the 201st military base stationed in Tajikistan have covered the distance of 200 kilometres (124 miles) from the Lyaur range to the
Harb-Maidon training ground near the border with Afghanistan," said
the defence ministry in Moscow.
