• Had no idea. The three black lines on school buses serve a purpose. The bottom line is the floor of the bus. The middle line is the seat line. The top black line is the top of the seats. These lines of the bus are reinforced, but they also let firefighters know where to cut in case of an accident.

    • Ex bus driver when they had four speed sticks: black on hoods prevents glare from sun on ours but could never understand NO SEATBELTS

    • Actually, no. Those black stripes that run along the sides & back of the school bus are actually metal “rub rails”, and they act as an extra layer of protection for the thin wall panels of the vehicle. Those rub rails would help absorb the force of a potential collision, while also preventing a car

    • The top of the seats go past the window so how can the top black line represent the top of the seats?

    • For everyone wondering about seatbelts, imagine if the bus caught fire and you had 71 kindergartners to get out of the seats while the foam cushioning underneath is trying to burn. It only takes a bus about 5 minutes to be completely burned on the inside so the kids need to get out quickly

    • I'm a school bus driver and I've never been told the black lines serve a purpose other than reinforcing the thin walls. A bus has the service door the rear emergency door, 4 emergency window exits and two emergency roof hatches for a total of 8 exits. I hope that's enough but this is good to know.

    • I too, was a career firefighter, and shift lieutenant, but never was told that those lines meant anything. Either your info is wrong or our training is.
