In 1836 a sewer worker who performed some routine checks beneath the city of London found an old drain that seemed to lead somewhere. The curious worker had followed the underground passage until he found himself inside one of the most secure places in the country!
He wrote letters to the directors of the bank and requested a meeting inside the vault in the Bank Of England at an hour of their choosing - and popped out of the floor to greet them. After the initial shock, a stock take revealed that he hadn't taken any gold. For his honesty, the Bank of England rewarded him with a gift of in today's money.
