Organ & Tissue Donation
September 21, 2006
My name is Berdette. I am a nurse who was wi ith your brother, Derick, after he died. Your father, David, asked me to write to you to tell you about an extraordinary thing that your brother did for other people.
After your brother died, your father knew that your brother would want to help other people, if he could. Your brother had healthy organs. He was able to help other people that he didn't even know by giving the gifts of healthy organs to them. You see there are many people who are very sick and who are waiting to receive new organs they can become well.
Here is some information about the people your brother helped through his gift of organ donation.
A 49-year-old man who suffered from liver disease received your brother's liver.
This man is married and lives in Illinois. He is unable to work and had waited for a liver transplant since January 2006. Approximately 17,000 people in the United States are now waiting for liver transplants. He is now recovering at home from his transplant surgery
-and is doing well. This individual is very grateful to you, his donor family, and said,
"Thank you." Derick's donation and your family's generosity have given this mana
future filled with hope.
One of Derick's kidneys went to a 56-year-old man from Minnesota who had diabetes. His dialysis treatments began in December 2002, and his name was added to the national kidney transplant waiting list in March 2006. This individual is married and has children, and he is not working due to his disease. He was discharged from the hospital following his kidney transplant and is recovering at home. His kidney is functioning well, and he no longer requires dialysis treatments. Derick's donation and your family's desire to help others have given this man a chance for a longer and healthier life, and he wanted
to tell you, "Thank you for helping me."
